VISITORS AT WORK KILCASH AND FLYING ACRE ATTRACTIVE SIX FURLONGS BY ABAYDOS Some useful galiops were recorded at Avondale yesterday, when the final training for the spring meeting, which opens to-day, was completed. Kilcash and Flying Acre went pleasingly over six furlongs, at which distance Sly Fox and Blonde Princess also worked well. Minority, Coronation, Don Quex, Kaiwaka and Foxmond performed creditably over five furlongs, while .Native Chief and Kindergarten ran a smart half-mile.. Erndale. who beat them home, ran 30 -l-5s and is in go.id S.illoping trim. Both Sly Fox and Blonde Princess shaped nicely. Bnau Rep aire went well within himself over a round. He bears a bright appearance, but may be all the hotter for a race. Marshall Hall, who has furnished into a handsome colt, sprinted smartly from the top of the straight. He is iif great heart and is likely to be prominent in his races at the meeting. Kilcash was slightly in front of Flying Acre, who was running on strongly, at the end of six furlongs in 1.19 1-5. They ran the first, two in '-'(is and the three in -10s. Flying Acre, who is fit, will be ridden to-day by W. Ford, who was successful on him at the Waikato Club's patriotic meeting in Juno. Foxmond. was. held back to Volifox at the end of five furlongsin 1.0, after running the first two in 28 2-ss. Foxmond is in great heart and only requires to begin smartly to have good prospects in the Flying Handicap. Greek Queen and Esquire were not extended over five furlongs in 1.12 4-5. the last, three taking -12 -1-ss. They appear to have done a good deal of work. A Sound Half-Mile Native Chief and Kindergarten attracted attention by running half a mile in 52 3-ss, the last three resolutely in 38' -1-5-s. Native Chief and Kindergarten are full-brothers and both appear fit. The Cardinal, who went very smoothly, and Spats were associated over three furlongs in 30s. The Cardinal is very bright and should have prospects of winning the Avondale Cup for the second year in succession. He will be .ridden to-day by B. Clark. Minority, Don Quex and. Coronation were together at the end of a solid five furlongs in 1.7 2-5, after running the first two in 275. Coronation, who raced only once last season, is.in good coudition. Don- Quex finished with determination and Minority galloped very freely. Both are recent winners. Valdcno came home well to record 40s for the last three of five furlongs. Veritable ran the last two of four furlongs in 25 3-ss. He is improving steadily. • - „ The two-year-olds Colombo Bay -and Greenock- were associated over three furlongs • run in 40s. Colombo Bay is the more seasoned and was running on solidly. Working behind them. Valley Maid registered'the same time. Hackensclnnidt and Tane Mahotu ran the last, few furlongs of their work smartly, but could not be timed. In spite of the fact that he has been in work only for about six weeks, the three--vcar-old selding by Niffger Minstrel "am Morse Signal in R. E. McLennan s stable at Invercargill is stated to be working exceptionallv well. He made good time in a nanmile trial recently and is a free galloper. Four-year-olds have a good record in the New Zealand Cup, 10 winners having been of that age, and three of the last four were mares, namely. Fast Passage, Palantua and Cerne Abbas. That age and sex are well represented in tho nominations for the 1940 contest, including Anita Serenata, Winning Rival and Classform. All these four are expected to be among the best handicap winners this season and all have shown staying ability. Although Heidelberg is still eligible for hack races, he will continue his career this season in open company and he has been accorded a nomination in the Zealand Cup. Last summer Heidelberg won the Wairio Cup from Sparkle, wjlio carried 31b. more, bv three lengths and Sparkle went on to score in similarly hollow fashion in t h e D»nedin Cup, 1% miles, in which the other did not start. AUCKLAND CLUB SPRING PROGRAMME The Mitchelson Cup, of £10.50, one and a-half miles, is tho principal race for the Auckland Racing Club's Spring Meeting, to be held at Ellerslic on October 12 and 14. Tho main item on the second day is the Spring Handicap, of £750, one and a-quarter miles. The Shorts Handicap and Flying Handicap, on the first day, and Epsom Handi-c-ii) and Liverpool Handicap, run the second day are each worth £450. and a steeplechase, of' £350, is included each day. The Groat Northern Guineas and Welcome Stakes will be run the first day, and two-year-olds will have another opportunity tho second day in the Musket Stakes.
