PEAK LOADS ON TRAMS
A MARKED IMPROVEMENT CIVIL SERVANTS' NEW HOURS There was a marked improvement yesterday in the spreading of peak periods on the tramways, as a result of civil servants starting and finishing work half an hour earlier than before. Auckland civil' servants who travel to work every day number about 2000, and Auckland Transport Board officials stated yesterday that tlie effect of their finishing work at 4.30 p.m., instead of at 5 p.m., was apparent in spreading the heavy loading period over- a larger part of the afternoon. Co-operation already received in the scheme for staggering working hours was the subject of appreciative comment by the chairman, Mr. W. H. Nagle, at a meeting of the Transport Board yesterday. He referred to the changes in working hours of civil servants, and also to the help given by Seddon Memorial Technical College in putting back its opening and closing hours. Mr. J. Sayegh said manufacturers in the city were finding it difficult to meet the board's wishes in the matter, but the question was to be considered further.
