SHIPPING LEVY
CONTROL OF BUBEAU J WATERFRONT' COMMISSION ADMINISTRATION COSTS Orders that owners, agents or masters of ships shall, from time to time, pay to the commission a levy of 2 per cent on the total wages or earnings paid to waterside workers at the port of Auckland for the loading and unloading of cargo, and that the Auckland waterfront labour bureau and pay office and all the staff shall be under the control of the commission, have been issued by the Waterfront Control Commission and will come into force on Wednesday. The orders are in pursuance of powers conferred on the commission by the Waterfront Control Commission Emergency Regulations, 1940. Tho levy, which will be applied to meet all salaries, wages and expenses in operating the waterfront labour bureau and pay office, will also provide a guaranteed weekly minimum payment to waterside workers. A third use for the money raised by levy will be to cover such proportionate cost of the salaries and expenses of the commission and staff as may, from time to time, bo determined by tho coinmis-
sion. . , . The orders were signed by the chairman of the commission, Mr. It. E. Price, and by Messrs. H. A. McLeod and James Roberts, commissioners.
