A. L. dVIATSON CHOSEN (TROTTING CLUB PRESIDENT . •BUILDING SCHEME DEFERRED

[BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] CHRISTCHURCH, "Wednesday The annual meeting of the New Zealand ■ Metropolitan Trotting Club was held to-night, when there was a record attendance, probably is a result of a much-debated election for office-holders. .Mr. A. L. Matson, with 291 votes, was elected president, Mr. F. E. Graham, the eenior vice-president, with 126 votes, being defeated, while M>. C. S. Thomas, with 203, was chosen as vice-president, defeating the Hon. W. Hayward, who gained 123 votes. Mr. Graham had been vice-president for ■many years and had carried out the duties ot-president since the passing of the late Mr. J. H. Williams, while Mr. Hayward has also been prominent in the Metropolitan Trotting: Club's affairs over a long period. Both the new office-holders are comparatively newcomers into the ranks of the club's officials, but they have been responsible for a good deal of its success in recent years. In the annual report the chairman stated that for some time local clubs had been considering building' a new grandstand on the outside cnclosnre at Addington and tenders had been called for this purpose. However, the officials thought that in view of conditions. it might not be in the interest of all to co ahead with the building plans. The Hon. W. Hayward was sent to Wellington to get tiie view of Government officials and he reported'to the club that the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry,' .had decided against going any further wjth the grandstand scheme at the moment, the spending of a large sum at a time when materials were not plentiful apparently being a big factor in this decision. TURF JOTTINGS TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP Dungarvan bled again at Woodville on Saturday, and he is not likely to be persevered with much longer. The Dunediiy Cup winner, Sparkle, is again In work. She went amiss before Easter and during her absence has put on a deal of flesh. No fast work has been permitted on the Invercargill racecourse for several weeks and trainers are taking their teams to other centres. One' of the first of the stock of Salmagundi to appear/in Southland is the Shelter filly, who has been entered for classic engagements. Shelter is an unraced mare by Silverado from Windshield, dam also of Shatter, Protector, Control and Surcoat. Mr. H. H. Pharazyn, owner of tho Wellington Centennial Cup winner, Old Bill, and Mr. W. Stratton, former secretary to the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club, and later of St. Heliers, Auckland, were residents of the Channel Islands, which wero raided by German aeroplanes last week. The death recently'of Mr. T. S. Roulston, of Hastings, removes a very familiar figure from the turf world. Mr. Roulston was a frequent visitor to Auckland for important meetings and he was a real racing enthusiast, who derived great pleasure from witnessing the early morning training whenever possible. The first of the progeny of Cough, a rising three-year-old filly by Nigger Minstrel, is doing well under F. W. Ellis, who intends shortly to bring in a filly from Stccton and a colt from Thornton. The three inures mentioned are by Sutala, Cough and Thornton —being sisters. Tho Stccton filly will race as Melodist. •J Gaelic Song put UP a Rood, performance to ■ dead-heat with El Meynell at Woodville, on i Saturday, as it was her first start s:n>e ■ Feilding at Easter.'She showed good form in < the autumn, one of her successes being in the Champion Hack v-up at "Gaelic Song is engaged at the Racing Club's Winter Meeting at Trenthnm next week.

The three-vear-old Globe formerly trained at Trenthami by H. Teirord, is now under the care /of W. H. D^je; r of Wa ncanui. As a two-year-old he won four races / and this season he has three wins, including the Wairarapa Cup, V/ A miles, f n d ,3,_ R £ co r° to his credit. Globe Trotter is a . *i Safari from Sight. Draft and is very useful when at his best.

All is reported to ho going well witbtho fcril'iant Sir Eeai;, who ls at Wanganui under the direction of W. .. Dwyer. in preparation. c . An^ nll r """ r "j second at his first start. Sir Beo -scorid three successive wins, including the W ington . Stakes, and he was one o the best of the season's two-year-olds. Uiiforlunateiy; a severe cold put him out of action autumn.

7~" One of tho horses nominated for the Mel bourne Cup is the 10-year-old J..ainlaw wlio was sixth in the 1035 contest, won by MaraN ■ bon. He was bought by a woman guineas ns n hack, bul the owner was P" '! suaded to race /Malnlaw. who had not won for four years.
