WIRE ON TRACK

TEPPON NEARLY DOWN EARLY TRAINING INCIDENT POLICE GUARDING BEAULIVRE BRISBANE, July 3 . described as a sinister incident aimed at preventing the New Zealand colt Beaulivre taking his place in the Doomben Newmarket Handicap next. Saturday was reported yesterday. During early track work the local horse leppon collided with a strand of fencing wire stretched across the track overnight by some evildoer, whom the police are trying to trace. Yeppon was nearly thrown down. A prominent bettor was of the opinion that the plot was instigated by starting-price bookmakers, who have heavy commitments on Beaulivre, who had not left his stall when the incident was reported. A special police guard is now stationed at Beaulivre's stall. BARGAIN JUMPERS LARGE PROFIT FOR OUTLAY GREAT NORTHERN EXAMPLES Since All Irish won the Great "Northern Steeplechase many instances have been quoted of horses bought at bargain prices who became good winners. Relatively to the amount gained. the purchase price of L'lo given for All .Irish makes him one of the best bargains on record. Levanter. Ilantere, Coalition, HI Oallo, filuepot, Sra Dr'il and Beau Cavalier were great jumpers who included the Great Northern Steeples in their records, and the most expensive by far was El Gallo, twice winner of the Great Northern double, who cost A.'-00 and a contingency. Levanter, Coalition and Beau Cavalier also won the Grand National. Beau Cavalier was secured for £55, Coalition and Levanter for £SO, Gluepot for 18 guineas, Hautere for £lO 10s, and Sea De'il for £3O.

El Gallo was a good performer on the flat also and he won over £4OOO for Mr. W. .T. Ralph. In two seasons, Beau Cavalier won nearly £7OOO and Coalition's winnings were £8535.

However, apart from the highly speculative buying of young and untried horses, there have been many examples of Australian and New Zealand gallopers being passed on at bargain prices. After winning his first three races as a three-year-old, Amounis was bought by Mr. A. P. Wade for 3000 guineas, his price as a yearling having been one-tenth that sum. In the following April, after he had won about £IO.OOO. Mr. Wade put Amounis up for auction, and at 1800 guineas ho became the property of Mr. W. Pearson, and. setting the seal to his fame by a victory in tho Caulfiold Cup as an • eight-year-old, he amassed over £45,000 in all. Thus, he made a fortune for two owners.

. The great stayer David was sold as a yearling for 40 guineas, and after winning "many valnable races lie was bought as a four-year-old from Mr. R. Baillie by Mr. IS'. Falkiner for 3000 guineas. After a few more successes Mr. Falkiner sold him to his brother. Mr. O. R. Falkiner. for the same price, and before he retired to the stud lie had amassed in excess of £31,000, over £25.000 being secured for his last owner. As a six-year-old, Pilliewinkie was secured by Sir Samuel Hordern for 2500 guineas nnd a contingency nnd he won £IO.OOO for the Sydney sportsman, at a time when his career on the racecourse could have been thought as drawing to a close. . Another example of the purchase of A proved horse is that of Cctinge, who as a four-vear-old was bought by Mr. T, A. Stirton for £ISOO and won £15,000 for him.
