TRADES UNION FEES

Sir, —May I ask Mr. Young, Secretary, Hotel and Restaurant Workers' Union, the following question:—Why is the sum of 6d per day deducted from tho wages of waitresses, kitchenwomen and others for casual work at the Ellerslie races ?

Many of these women and girls are in poor circumstances and only work one day, the wages being 15s less 9d tax, 6d for the union (to which they do not belong), and pay their own tram or bus fares in addition to supplying smocks, overalls, etc. Perhaps Mr. Young may be able, to quote his authority for this deduction, as his union must have collected quite a few pounds from these women during the Winter Meeting at Ellerslie, causing many heartburnings. Casual Worker.
