DEER AND GOATS
PLANS FOR DESTRUCTION WINTER CAMPAIGNS Plans have been prepared by the fields branch of the Department of Internal Affairs for a winter campaign for the destruction of deer in certain badly-infested parts of the Dominion. The Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon W. E. Parry, stated yesterday that he had under consideration recommendations for a renewed and vigorous attack 011 colonies of deer and goats in Marlborough and Westland, in which districts the depredations of the animals had become extensive. In the - Tararua ranges, near Wellington, there had been a good toll of deer in past campaigns. It .was hoped it would be possible this winter to cut some further tracks in the bush of the Tararua ranges for the inauguration of a summer campaign. It was reported that goats had largely increased in number in the Marlborough district and were creating great damage to the native bush, said Mr. Parry. Officers engaged in deer destruction usually dealt with goats also, but it had been found necessary for special measures to be taken against goats in the Marlborough district. "The menace of deer and goats to native bush and pastures is very considerable," added the Minister, "and there must be no lessening of efforts to deal with the animals.
