AMBULANCE DRIVER
TRAINING IN ENGLAND AUCKLAND GIRL'S WORK PREPARATION FOR FRANCE [VIIOII OUR OWN correspondent] IXSNDON, March 5 Now training to drive an ambulance in Franco is Miss Cara Mugglewortli, of Grafton Road, Auckland, who is a member of the Mechanised Transport Corps, which is composed entirely of women. It is exacting work, for, in addition to the regulation Guards' drill of marching, forming threes and so on, map reading and car maintenance have to ho studied, as well as anti-gas and first-aid work. Map reading is particularly important. It is equally necessary to be able to carry out running repairs. Miss Mugglewortli joined the corps rather than wait indefinitely to be attached to a hospital for New Zealand troops. She qualified at Otago llniveisity, after leaving Solway College as a masseuse. Last year slie completed a post-graduate course at the Middlesex Hospital. She is a New Zealand registered masseuse. Before coming to England she also worked at the Auckland Hospital. Members of the Mechanised Transport Corps need not join for the duration of the war. so that Miss- Mugglewortli hopes eventually to serve with the New Zealand Forres. In Kngland members receive no pay, but when they are in France they will get "pocket, money and expenses.'' Miss Mugglewortli joined early in January, and since passing her "intensive training course" she has been lecturing to new recruits. She has also examined in first-aid. Hours are from 9.30 a.m. until 6, p.m. at the headquarters in Lower Belgrave Street, London. Recruits usually drill daily on the parade ground for an hour and a-halr, attend lectures and learn how "Aggie"—the nickname for the ambulance—is worked.
