APPRECIATION OF SERVICES
LIFE'S WORK FOR PEOPLE
Tributes to Mr. Savage and ;m appreciation of his services to the community j over a long period were expressed at | a special meeting of the Auckland City Council yesterday afternoon. In addiI tion to tlie Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, and a large number of members of the council, there were also present Mr. G. AY. Hutchison, a former Mayor, and nine former members of the council. The Mayor also extended a welcome to the Premier of Queensland, Mr. W. Forgan Smith, who is visiting Auckland. Mr. Forgan Smith paid a graceful tribute to the memory of Mr. Savage. The Mayor moved that the council express its profound regret at the death of Mr. Savage and the loss the Government and the country had suffered as a consequence; place on record its belief that the passing of .Mr. Savage has deprived Xew Zealand of a personality whose sincerity of purpose. clarity of ideal, steadfastness of outlook and indomitable spirit were dedicated throughout a long and distinguished public career to the service of his fellow men: and tender to his relatives and colleagues an assurance of its heartfelt sympathy in their period of sorrow. Sir Ernest further proposed that a copy of the resolution he transmitted to the relatives and to the deputy-Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Eraser. ''l cannot find words to convey my personal feelings." said Sir Ernest, in moving the motion. "I knew Mr. Savage intimately for many years as one of nature's own gentlemen. I agree with all that is said about him, that he was a very lovable man, a true friend of the people, and one whose integritv was ironclad." In seconding the motion, the deputymayor. Mr. .T. A. C. Allum, said he had always found Mr. Savage a kindly gentleman. actuated by high ideals and human motives. Mr. C. Bailev. who for some years had been Mr. Savage's election secretary. said Mr. Savage had practically no private life, having dedicated his life wholly to public service, Xo man in Xew Zealand had enjoyed the goodwill of so many of his const it ileitis. "His whole aim was to do somelhing for others," said Mr. E. F. Andrews, while Mrs. M. M. Dreaver said that this fine and honourable gentleman would always be remembered by the women and children of Xew Zealand.
Mr. A. Posser. a former member of the council, said ho had learned of Mr. Savage's worth and the value of his counsel from long association with him.
Mr. .T. .T. Sullivan said_~Mr. Savage's works spoke adequately of liis life.
"The Suburban local bodies of Auckland join with the rest of Xew Zealand in mourning the loss of Mr. Savage, and desire to he associated with the motion." said Mr. 1. .1. Goldstine. Mayor of One Tree Hill and of the Auckland Suburban Local findies' Association.
