AUCKLAND TRIBUTES MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR AN IRREPARABLE LOSS FLAGS FLOWN AT HALF-MAST Public sorrow at tlio death of Mr. •Savage was evident throughout Auckland yesterday. From many buildings flags were flown at half-mast as a mark ot respect. Flags were also at halfmast on all ships, including foreign vessels. A two minutes' was observed on the waterfront at 11. a.m., work of every description ceasing for that period. ''All sections of the community will be united in grief over this sad event," said the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, in a telegram which be sent to the deputyPi "i 1110 Minister, the lion. P. Fraser, on receiving the news of the death of Mr. Savage. The telegram was as follows : "On behalf of the corporation and citizens ot Auckland, may f tender to you and your sorrowing colleagues ail expression of profound sympathy in the irreparable loss your Government and the country have suffered through the death of the Prime Minister. "The passing of Mr. Savage has deprived New Zealand of a lovable personality, whose sincerity of purpose, clarity of ideal. Steadfastness of outlook and indomitable spirit set the seal on a long and distinguished public ea reer. '"From my earliest recollections of him the late Prime Minister had dedicated his life to the service of his fellow-men, devoting unwavering loyalty toward, and sparing neither his ability nor himself in, the fulfilment of that mission. "Personally, 1 mourn the passing of a man whose friendship over many years is beyond adequate description. All sections of the community will be united in grief over this sad event."
