SHIPS OF THE FUTURE

RUBBER COAT FOR HULLS [from our own correspondent] LONDON, March 2 Ships of the future may have longer lives as a result of experiments on the 1420-ton luxury motor-yacht Phil ante, owned by Mr. T. O. M. Sopwith, the millionaire. The experiments, designed to stop corrosion by sea water on the hulls of ships, have been declared successful and are being extended to other vessels. The hulls are encased in chlorinated rubber dissolved in an organic solvent and applied with a brush. In about iwo hour« the solvent evaporate;;, leaving a thin, hard fifm, which resists sea water, the atmosphere and many other influences.
