MATERNITY HOSPITAL
PROPOSAL DEFERRED NEW LYNN AND HENDERSON A decision to defer plans to provide a maternity hospital for the New Lynn and Henderson districts was reached by the Hospital Board last night on the recommendation of the Buildings Committee. The committee reported that a site and six-roomed dwelling at New Lynn had been inspected. It was estimated that the cost of acquiring the property, converting the buildings into a maternity hospital, erecting a new ward and providing equipment would bo about £4OOO. Under present conditions it was recommended that provision of the hospital be deferred until after the new building at the infirmary was completed. It was also recommended that, in the event of a nurse establishing a maternity hospital in suitable premises in the district, the board should pay a subsidy. The chairman, Mr. Allan J. Moody, said it was time the Government assumed greater responsibility and a more determined attitude toward St. Helens. The committee's recommendations were adopted.
