FIFTY YEARS AGO

MOVE FOR EIGHT-HOUR DAY Labour unions in England and the United States 50 j'ears ago were advocating a limit on the day's work to <;ight hours. The following editorial comment appeared in the New Zealand Herald of March 8, 1890: "Eight hours have, from time immemorial, been recognised as the customary day's work for all engaged in manual labour in this colony. "We do not know how, where or with whom the rule originated. On May Day nex;t, the trades unions of the United States are to hold a demonstration in favour of the eight hours system, and are to be_ joined bv similar unions in Great Britain and Europe. In this brief form the news is cabled to us. Its full significance can only be appreciated by those who have followed the progress of labour organisation and know the enormous power which it already wields in England. This power has been recently displayed in a manner that commanded the world's attention; In the United States it is immensely greater.
