PATRIOTIC FUNDS

Sir. —In view of the apathy or indifference of the public in subscribing to the various patriotic funds, would it not be a good idea to utilise our regular art unions for this purpose? Right or wrong, it seems the general public want something for their money. During the last war some of the most successful art unions for patriotic purposes were those with motor-cars offered as prizes. I would suggest that four-fifths of the net proceeds of the art unions be used for patriotic purposes, and one-fifth be devoted to the present objects. I am confident the public would respond. One thing that would require altering is the cost of running the art unions. As there would be a great increase in the number of tickets sold, the present sellers' commission could be cut by fit least half, and the promoters' commission pruned. Humble Suggestion.
