CUSTOMS COLLECTION DROP OF £31,639 SHOWN SALES TAX ALSO LOWER THE YIELDS FOR FEBRUARY An all-round decline is shown in the revenue collected by the Customs Department at Auckland in February. The customs return was the owest. for February since 1936. Customs revenue last month was £265,027, or £52,868 lower than in February, 1939. DUNEDIN COLLECTIONS GROSS RECEIPTS TJP 414000 ' [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION"] DUNEDIN, Thursday Gross customs receipts for the Port of Otago for the month of February reveal an increase of a little over £4OOO in revenue, compared with the same month last year. A sharp fall was shown in net customs return. 1 !, but an advance in beer duty helped to make up the deficit, which was further reduced by a large number of additional taxes imposed under the war emergency regulations. Customs duty amounted to £58,079, nearly £1.5,000 below February, 1939. Beer dutv, however, rose from. £27,286 to £37,265. Returns from sales tax also showed an increase, receipts being £23,255, as against £22,973 last year. In spite of the petrol restrictions, petrol tax returns showed onlj r a small decrease, the total being £15,41b, compared with £15,946.
