ME. MACKLEY RETIRES 40 YEARS OF SERVICE MR. E. CASEY APPOINTED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION 3 CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday The Minister of Railways, tlio Hon. D. C\ Sullivan, announced to-day that tlie general manager of railways, Mr. G. H. Mackley, who would complete 40 years' service with the department on January 31, had requested permission to retire as from that date. The Cabinet had decided to comply with his request and had instructed the Minister to convey to Mr. Mackley its appreciation of his long and devoted service to tlie depiirtnieni. The Cabinet had also approved the appointment of Mr. E. Casey, liist assistant general manager, to the position of • general manager from February 1.

Mr. Mackley, who was appointed general manager in May, 1933, joined the service as a cadet in the traffic department at Otautau, Southland, in 1900. In 1907 he was appointed clerk in the Cliristchurcli goods department. After transfers on promotion to Petone and Invercargillj- he was appointed assistant relieving officer, and in 1913 became stationmaster at Heriot. After qualifying as a train-running officer, Mr. Mackley was posted to Ohakune, where he represented the department before the Railway Appeal Board. Mr. Mackley was selected in 1928 as chief clerk in the head office, Wellington, and in December, 1931, was appointed assistant general manager.

Mr. Casey joined the civil engineering branch in 1902 and gained experience at Greymouth, Ohakune, Auckland and Wanganui. He became assistant engineer at Auckland in 1912, and had charge of the grade easement work between Penrose and Mercer until 1921. In 1924 he became district engineer for Auckland, and the following year was stationed at Wellington as inspecting engineer of Railways. From 1926 to 1931 Mr. Casey was divisional superintendent for the North Island, becoming assistant chief engineer in the latter year. Keenly interested in Rugby, Mr. Casey was a member of the Auckland Rugby Union and a delegate to the. New Zealand Union.
