SURF LIFE-SAVING

CONTROL OF BEACHES MAINTAINING THE PATROLS RESCUES IN PAST SEASON Determination that patrols should bo maintained by surf clubs during the war period, in spite of the fact that they were already seriously weakened through the enlistment of members, was expressed at the annual meeting of the Surf Life-saving .Association (Auckland) last night. The president, Dr. T. H. Pettit, said lie was extremely gratified that so many surfmon had enlisted for national service. However, tlie association's protection of bathers must be continued, and he suggested means by which' clubs that had been badly weakened could be assisted by others. I-le referred to letters from two clubs offering the services of members for this purpose.

Pleasure at the exceptionally largo attendance of delegates was expressed by Dr. Pettit. Reviewing-activities during last season, lie referred to the co-operation given by members of surf clubs to tho national "lcarn-to-swim" campaign. Their assistance was considerable. Dr. Pcttit also complimented Messrs. D. Hun tear and A. Gardner on their appointment to tho national board of examiners.

Clubs were congratulate! Un their excellent work bv the chairman of the executive. Mr. A. Gardner, who said that this praiso: was justified by the fart that they performed 78 rescues during the season. The urgent necessity for surf life-saving clubs to be vested with authority to control bathers at beaches was the subject of comment by Mi. T. 11. Pearco. It was agreed that representations should be made to the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, on the question An honorarium of Iftgns was voted to Miss C. M. Sheriff, in recognition of her work as honorary secretary. Her enthusiasm and remarkablo efficiency were warmly praised by Dr Pettit and Mr. Gardner, on behalf o'r affiliated clubs and officials of tho association.
