WOMEN'S DIVISION
PIAKO QUARTERLY MEETJNG
SOCIAL SECURITY INSTANCE The quarterly meeting of the Piako Provincial Executive of the W.D.F.U. was held in the Municipal Chambers recently. The president, Mrs. W. Wallace, presided. The housekeeping report showed that 10 positions had been iilled during the quarter. Considerable discussion took place over ways and means of facilitating the placing of housekeepers and of reducing postal costs. A list of subjects for adult education classes was submitted, but as these classes would not be held till April, full discussion of the matter was deferred. A case was cited of a married woman who, having had an accident involving considerable expense, both for medical and domestic help, had applied for assistance under the Social Security Act. Because she was not a wage-earner this woman received a. reply from the authorities that she was "suffering from no disability." "It would appear," the speaker added, "that the only way "in which a married woman could receive benefit from her payment of Social Security tax would be to overburden the already over-worked staffs of public hospitals every time she needed medical attention." Attention was drawn to the lead given by headquarters to all branches to work in conjunction with the Red Cross, while at the same time keeping the identity of the division. This did not bar individuals who wished to, from assisting any patriotic society.
