POPULAR GOLFER
DOMINION OPEN CHAMPION The success of J. P. Hornnhrook in tho New Zealand open golf championship will bo very popular among followers of the game in tho Dominion. Although ho has previously won the title, he will no doubt derive much inoro satisfaction from his win at Mirimar than was the case at Hamilton two years ago. On that occasion he won (he play-oil' after A. Murray, who returned the lowest score, had been disqualified for a breach of the rules.
The scores returned b.v Hornabrook at Mirimar would have been difficult to beat even had prominent overseas players been taking part. His first round of 78 was a creditable effort, as he struck tho worst of the weather. Following a 7:5 in the second round he carded a brilliant Ci.S, the best of the tournament, and with tho strain on finished with a fine 7 - _>. Ihe new open champion is a powerful player both with woods and irons and has a correct swing. His putting style is uninuo and is one. which he himself thought out and adopted some years ago. His hands are directly opposed and, with his elbows well out, he swings tho club with his arms and shoulders. Few golfers could grip the club as Homabrook does, but in his case it has proved very effective. as he is one of tho soundest putters in the Dominion.
