FORTY YEARS' SERVICE
POSTAL OFFICIAL RETIRES MR. S. A."* BENNETT'S CAREER Forty years' service with the' Post and Telegraph Department has been terminated by Mr. S. A. Bennett, supervisor of the telegraph delivery, branch at the Chief Post Office, Auckland, who has retired on superannuation. Mr.* Bennett joined the department as a message boy in 1599 and has been stationed at Auckland during all but four years of his service. From 1910 t0'1913 ne was at Wellington. : Always closely associated with service associations, Mr. Bennett was district secretary of the Post and Telegraph Officers' Association for 10 years prior to 1930. He held a similar position with the Post and Telegraph Officers' Guild for seven years and represented the Auckland district at conferences from 1935 onward, being elected Dominion vice-president for three successive years. Mr. Bennett was instrumental in forming Post and Telegraph cadet comEanies in Auckland and Wellington. In is earlier years he was connected .with the Boy Scout movement, and was the first scoutmaster in New Zealand, forming the first patrol from telegraph message boys in 1901. Mr. Bennett is still an active worker in youth organisations, being; connected with the Methodist Church and the Boys' Brigade. At a-farewell gathering at the Chief Post Office reference, to Mr. Bennett's work in training staff and assisting service activities was made by Mr. A. M. Rosie, deputy-postmaster, Mr. C. B. Venimore, superintendent of the telegraph department, and Mr. W. C. McNamara, assistant-superintendent. Mr. Bennett was presented with a set of bowls and an easy chair frtim "the staff.
