SPORTSMEN RETURN
PROFESSIONAL PLAYERS NEW SOUTH WALES CRICKETERS Four prominent Australian sportsmen, J. E. Walsh, J. G. Lush, V. E. Jackson and F. Hurley, who have been fulfilling professional engagements in England, arrived in Auckland on their return journey to Sydney. The first three were members of Sir Julien Calm's cricket team, while Hurley, a former New South Wales Rugby League representative, has been playing professional football in England for several seasons.
An interesting: description of his experiences in England under war conditions was Riven by Hurley, who expressed admiration of tho manner in which the people were adapting themselves. No panic was discernible when the air raid warnings were sounded, the people retiring in orderly fashion to the shelters, sonio of which, in spite of the limited space available, bad been inado very comfortable. Shortly after Hurley left Liverpool for America two British warships convoying the boat on which ho was travelling reported having located and destroyed an enemy submarine. Later durinsr the voyage a British aeroplane flew over the ship and tho pilot advised the captain to alter his course so as to avoid another raider. Walsh, the most brilliant bonier in tho team brought to New Zealand last season by Sir Julien Calin, took over 200 wickets in England in the season which ended in September. He and Jackson made the trip to America together, where they contacted Lush and H. Mudge, another Australian member of Sir Julien Cahn's side. Mudge stayed on in America and is expected lo return in company with H. G. Vivian, the New Zealand representative cricketer, who also played in England last season.
