FIFTY YEARS AGO

DEFENCE FORCE OFFICERS

The appointment of inexperienced young men as commissioned officers in New Zealand's Defence Force in preference to non-commissioned men of experience was arousing public indignation 50 years ago. The following is an extract from the Nkw .Zealand Herald of October 31, 18S9: — "The appointment of new cadets has taken a somewhat unexpected turn. The idea which prevailed was that the Government had decided to extend the provision for scientific military education. It is now evident that the men of the Permanent Artillery do ot acquiesce in the appointment of young officers who have had no previous experience in military matters. Their discontent has hp/i tho effect of,inspiring public indignation i and there is no ff very great doubt whether the appointments will be confirmed." - .'
