[WORLD CELEBRATION IMPORTANCE OF SAVING INTERNATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE The 15th annual celebration of {,' "Thrift Day" will be observed to-day by 5500 savings institutions in 37 ir "i countries. The idea of the day M*as conceived at the first International I Thrift Congress held in Milan in 1924, when it was unanimously approved by ' 500 delegates representing the savings . ; ' institutions of 27 countries. r ;

From the it has been a feature of Thrift Day that' it is not in the . nature of an idle festivity.- The celebration aims at it-cussing publi c : opinion all over the world on the foni damental importance of thrift for .the advancement and welfare of indi.n' viduals and nations and for the econo- * mic and moral reconstruction of the world.

This objective was emphasised this year at the annual'meeting at Lisbon of the permanent committee of tht International Thrift Institute, an £ organisation formed. after the first international congress.

The manner in which thrift is prac - tised in New Zealand is indicated bv figures supplied by the Auckland Savings Bank, which is one of the institutions associated with to-dav's celt', bration. Deposit accounts at the bank number 191,000, an increase of several thousand over last year's figure. The bank's depositors-include 9500 thrift accounts in 308 c)-<us and 13 gnn school banks from 78 schools. .There are 8600 penny bank accounts and home savings bank boxes in 12.400, an increase over those in rise last year. . 1
