OTAHUHU PROSECUTIONS ; MOTORIST'S HIGH SPEED > Remarking that 55 miles an hour through a restricted speed area was unreasonable, Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., imposed a fine of £5 and 10s costs on William Patrick Anderson in the Magistrate's Court at Otahuhu yesterday. Inspector F. Jones, of the Transport Department, said defendant drove a small motor-truck northward through Papatoetoe on September 16 at an excessive speed. His course past tin. A charge of committing a broach of a goods service licence was preferred against William John Archibald Gorrie, or Donnelly's Crossing. Defendant was fined £4 and 10s costs. Charges of operating heavy traffic vehicles without the appropriate licences were brought against McCarten Brothers, and Harry Ashforth, carrying contractors, engaged in transporting materials to the military camp at Papakura. Inspector A. E. Hodgson sadi McCarten Brothers' lorry had been 2Scwt. overladen, the amount of additional licence fee payable being 55s 3d o quarter. A fine of £4 and 10s costs was entered. Witness said Ashforth had taken out the licence a few days after the check. The magistrate said defendant had written to say that he had been xinable to arrange his licence as he was'awaiting moneys from the Public Works Department. A fine of 20;< and Us costs was imposed.
