'ASSAULT BY LABOURER OBSTRUCTED AN ARREST > TWO MONTHS IN PRISON Charged •with assaulting Constable Clarence Thomas Price while in the execution of his duty on October 19, Daniel Marmaduke South, labourer, aged 59, appeared before Mr. C. R.' jOrr Walker, S.M., in tho Police Court yesterday. He pleaded not guilty. In describing tho incident from which the charge arise, Senior-Sergeant Joyce Baid that two other men concerned had already been dealt with. Accused had escaped, but was subsequently caught £>y the police. Constable Price said that at 8 p.m. > ion October 19 he was arresting a drunk , inan in Victoria Street and was putting into a taxi -when he was attacked by-two men, one of whom was accused. 'Accused's companion dragged witness tout 6i,one side of the car and accused pulled Hhe drunk man out on the opposite side. Witness went round the car to put the drunk man back and was * struck by both the attackers, accused kicking him. Accused's companion and the drunk man were arrested, but laccused escaped. Other witnesses gave evidence of Seeing accused strike Constable Price in the back and kick him on a leg. It ;was also stated that accused kicked an 'Armv reservist who went to the conItable's assistance.. In evidence accused denied seeing anything of. the incident, saying he was in a billiard saloon at the time. In sentencing accused to two months imprisonment, the magistrate remarked that he had been convicted several times before for assault and for resisting the police.
