AMPUTATION NECESSARY FALL OF TWO-TON ROCK LONG JOURNEY TO THE CITY Although his right arm was badly crushed when a large "piece of rock weighing about two tons rolled ottiit at Tomarata yesterday, remarkable fortitude was shown by Mr. James Scott, aged 31, married, of Wellsford, during the four and a-half hours before his admission to the Auckland Hospital following a journey of nearly .70 miie S) which was made in three vehicles.
A contractor by occupation, Mr. Scott was working in his quarry at Tomarata about two o'clock yesterday afternoon ' when the piece of rock became ' dislodged and rolled over his arm. As he was alone, Mr. Scott had to make a painful journey of about a quarter of a mile to a farm house to obtain assistance. From there he was taken 12 miles in a motor-car to Dr. H. Morrison's surgery at Wellsford. Dr. Morrison immediately called a St. John ambulanco from Auckland, and after giving Mr. Srott medical attention took him in his car to meet the ambulance. The meeting occurred near Warkworth and after a brisk run i a the ambulance the patient was admitted to the-hospital at 6.30 p.m.. Diagnosis had shown that Mr. Scott had suffered a compound fracture of his arm and it was necessary to amputate it at the elbow shortly after his arrival at the hospital.-His condition last night was reported to be not serious.
