FOUR BURGLARIES
MOUNT EDEN HOUSES EARLY MORNING INCIDENTS YOUNG WOMAN ALARMED ' A series of burglaries was committed in the neighbourhood of Valley Road, Mount Eden, early on Thursday morning, but beyond a small sum of money found in-some clothing in One house, and a few easily carried personal articles from two others, the thief secured little of value. Miss W. I. S. Blue, of 20 Ashton Road, had the alarming experience of being awakened by the flashing of a torch in her eyes. She managed to close the window through which a man was peering, and ho disappeared. Miss Blue told Detective McDonald that at about 2.45 a.m. she awoke suddenly to find a man standing outside the window. He shone a powerful torch in her eyes and thrust his hand through the window, but she was able to close the window, which forced him to loosen his grip. She summoned her parents, but the man had gone. - •
The home of Mr. I. Mclndos, of 26 Valley Road, was broken into and money taken from some clothing left in the sitting-room. Entry to the house had been effected through the bathroom window, which was unlocked. A large torch also was stolen. The intruder had set alight a large quantity of paper in an outhouse, for the place was littered with spent matches and blackened, paper. The house next door also was entered, but although the premises were ransacked, nothing was taken. Mrs. C. C. Durham, of 14 Ashton Road, was awakened at about 2.30 a.m. by the sound of someone moving about in another part of the house. She thought it was a member of the family and called out. The burglar beat a hasty retreat. He apparently had removed some personal belongings from the bedroom occupied by Mrs. Durham's daughter and was examining" them when Mrs. Durham called. So far as the family was able to say yesterday, nothing was missing from the rooms.
