ECLIPSE OF MOON
PHENOMENON ON SATURDAY TIMES OF THE STAGES A partial eclipse of the moon will be visible in Auckland on Saturday evening, when the moon will rise shortly after the middle of the eclipse, the magnitude of which will lie 0.992 of the lunar diameter, or practically total. The first stage of the eclipse will occur at 3.42 p.m., when the moon will enter the penumbral shadow, but this stage, as well as the contact with the true shadow, which follows at 4.54 p.m., will not be visible in Auckland. Moonrise will occur at 6.48 p.m., 12 minutes after the greatest phase of the eclipse. As the moon rises higher in the sky, the earth's shadow will slowly pass off the disc, last umbral contact occurring .at 8.18 p.m., while the penumbral stage will continue until 931 p.m. This latter phase, however, results in such a slight diminution in tlio moon's light as to be almost imperceptible. Saturday's eclipse is the fourth and final one of the year, the earlier one» comprising annular and total eclipses of the sun and a total eclipse of the moon.
