MR. GOODFELLOW'S FACTS
Sir, —I have read Mr. Savage's comment on Mr. Goodfellow's candid statement as to what is thought overseas of New Zealand and its financial position under, the present Government. There is nothing m Mr. Savage's reply, but it recalls the old gag, which ran, "It isn't what he said but the nasty way lie said it."
Mr. Savage cannot refute Mr. Goodfellow's facts so lie falls back on petty abuse. Any thinking person knows what people outside New Zealand must think, and we are indebted to Mr. Goodfellow for his confirmation of our surmises. As a good citizen Mr. Goodfellow would be failing in his duty if he did not issue a warning.
Mr. Savage trios to throw the blanio on past Governments for the load of debt they left. Admittedly we havp the debt, hut the Inst Government left 'assets for the debt, a very sound financial position and ample reserves. Mr. Savage does not say anything about the extra debt and financial moss this Government is going to leave for its successors. Any schoolboy could have put Mr. Savage wise to the fact that if yon only have one shilling you can't spend two. ( There is no doubt that, even with strong Labour supporters, a sense of doubt is being manifest. Hence the instructions to Labour councils to discipline any union members who venture to doubt or criticise the Government's methods, and all the restrictions that, are being imposed. They are getting uneasy as to -the outcome and they have good reason to be. Mr. Sa\ •age thinks Mr. Goodfellow and everybody else should shut their eyes to facts', and have implicit eon-, fidence in him. He assured us that the Government would not hurt anyone, but day by day more merchants, importers and farmers are being ruined by the Government's methods, and his assurances and promises are worthless. In conclusion J would say that Mr. Savage should thank -Air. Goodfellow, as many of us do, for his "warning. G. W. Heald.
