KAREKARE FATALITY
Sir, —With reference to the fatalitv which took place at. Kareknre last, week-end, I think it is desirable to make reference to one or two points. Firstly, I think our deepest sympathy should be extended to Mr: Sellar's family, and I think they should feel very proud of the way in which he methis death—saving his friends. Secondly, it should be remembered that this was the first drowning to occur at this beach since our surf club was formed .some five years ago. A large number of tilings have erroneously boon blamed on the outbreak of war, but this is one matter which can be directly attributed to the present situation. Nearly two completo patrols arc now on active service, th«» personnel including the club captain, the secretary, and several of our best surfmen. Unless more young chap* step in to (ill the gaps these men hav»* left, it will be almost impossible to carry on this necessary work. A large number of fellows seem to join up solely to obtain a club blazer. Thev turn up for one or two patrols and then disappear. This is not the type of fellow we want. Certainly it entails some sacrifice, and some personal risk, but if we have done the job for the past five seasons, why cannot others p ■Surf Medallion.
