BRITAIN'S EXPORTS
MAINTAINING TRADE EFFORTS DURING WAR COMMISSIONER'S RETURN Britain's determination to maintain her export trade in spite of the war was stressed yesterday hv Mr. R. Boulter, British Trade Commissioner in New Zealand, who has returned to' the Dominion after spending nine months' leave abroad. Mr. Boulter left England to return to his post in New Zealand 10 days after war started. Some months ago Britain was equipped and ready to handle a very rapid increase in trade, which would have followed any casing in the international tension, Mr. Boulter said. The war was inevitably a setback, as major effort was immediately concentrated on the war.
Naturally this left a smaller margin for normal production, and there were the added handicaps of transport difficulties, and higher freight and insurance charges. Nevertheless, it was definitely part of Britain's policy to use every possible endeavour to maintain export trade to the utmost.
Mr. Boulter was unwilling to comment on the reaction in England to New Zealand's import restrictions. He expects to leave for Wellington to-day.
