Sullivan, that it is impossible to reduce tho cost of petrol on the east coast, the Waiapu County C'thmcil lias decided to ask the Minister for an explanation of the high cost of transport, from Auckland to Tokomnru Hay, estimated at more tlinn (3d a gallon. The Minister, stated that the greater bulk of petrol consumed in Tokornaru Hay was shipped from Auckland, and only very occasionally, when there was a shortage, was any petrol transported overland from Gisborne, and even then only in small quantities. As the result of nn ■ investigation, figures had been obtained which clearly indicated that it was impossible to reduce the price of petrol in this area. Figures showed that the average cost of making deliveries of motor spirit from Auckland depots to depots in Tokomaru Hay worked out at G.:52d a gallon, whereas the difference in the price of petrol per gallon in these two-places was only Gd, The council was of the opinion"that 4d should cover the cost of transport and it was decided to ask the Minister to explain how his estimate of 6.32 d was arrived at.
