CRICKET SEASON

OPENING TO-MORROW STRONG SENIOR ELEVENS TWO GAMES AT EDEN PARK Y.M.C.A. TO MEET PARNELL The 1939-40 cricket season in Auckland will be opened to-morrow, when, in spite of the fact that teams have had little opportunity for practice, some bright play should be witnessed. Recent wet weather has precluded any intensive work at the nets, and batsmen, more so than bowlers, will be handicapped as a result. There is every possibility that the wickets will be slow in pace, which should put spin bowlers at an advantage. Although the oval at Eden Park is not vet ready for play, games will be staged on Nos. 3 and -1 wickets. In the principal fixture on No. 3 wicket. Y.M.C.A. will engage Parnell. Y.M.C.A. will bo without the services of V. Scott and Solomon, who are on their way back with the New Zealand Rugby League team, but tho club should field a strong eleven. Parnell, too, will miss the services of H. G. Vivian, but it still has some outstanding batsmen and a fairly good attack. University will bo eager to justify its retention in tho first grade when it meets the strong Grafton combination on No. -1 wicket. The odds favour Grafton, which is solid in all departments, but University is expected to field a strengthened side. The champions of last year, Eden, will try conclusions with Ponsonby-Balmoral, at Papatoetoe. Ponsonby-Balmoral is expected to show improvement by tho infusion of new blood, but it will be facing a difficult task. North Shore will also have to go all out in its fixture with Middlemore, at Devonport, as tho lntter has been strengthened by the acquisition of several outstanding players.
