MILITARY PROMOTION
Sir, —I have just read an article in the Hkrald entitled "Making Soldiers." Your report says that "unit". commanders are sending some of the most promising non-commissioned officers to Trentham for training as officers of the third echelon, when good corporals and sergeants are urgently needed in their own units." This to me is more than difficult to understand, when men who were noncommissioned officers in Territorial units long before war was declared, but who were over the age limit for commissions (although recommended by their senior officers as thoroughly efficient men to hold commissions), have volunteered their services with this special force. When many of these men came to camp at Hopuhbpu," their rank was taken .away, and they were told they would again have to earn their stripes if they wanted them. It seems a wrong thing that capable men of .'3O years and over are treated in this manner. Fair Play.
