OBITUARY
MR. JAMES EVANS [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] DUKEDIN, Friday The death has occurred of Mr. James Evans, well known in business circles throughout the Dominion. He was born in South Melbourne, Victoria, in 1882, and arrived at Christ- , church with his parents in 1886. He returned to Melbourne .in 1889, but finally settled in Wellington. He joined Messrs. Sargood, Sou and Ewen in 1899, and entered the employ of Ross and Glendining, Limited, in Wellington in 1903, being transferred to Christ; church in 1905 and to Auckland wherry the firm opened there in July, 190". During the war Mr. Evans acted as adjutant of the Auckland Mounted Rifles in the Palestine campaign and took part in every engagement on.that: front until transferred to France in April, 1917. He was mentioned in despatches for services in the Battja of Rafa in January, 1917. He was promoted to the rank of captain and was attached to the Auckland Infantry Regiment. 3rd Brigade. He was awarded the Military Cross for services at Passchendaele. He . returned' to France after a prolonged, spell in, hospital and took over ►command of the loth North Auckland Company, i 2nd Battalion, Auckland I&fanirv Regiment. until the armistice. He was awarded a bar to -the Military Cross at Crevecour on the attack the Hindenburg Line in September, i9lB. At the e'nd of 1919 Mr. Evans re- ' joined Ross and Glendining and was appointed a director of the company in 1921. He was chairman of the executive of the New Zealand Woollen Mill Owners' Association. On the formation of the New Zealand Woollen Manufacturers' Research Association, which, is linked with the University of Otago, he was appointed chairman.
