DARK FUMES RISING INTEREST AT CHATEAU[BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] THE CHATEAU. Monday Unusual activity at Ngauruhoe litis afternoon aroused much interest among guests at the Chateau. A distinct column of light coloured fames was visible at the summit of tho volcano and at times it became .darker and rose about a quarter of tho height of . tho mountain above the summit-. At first the column was thought to be clouds round the mountain, but it persisted and was seen to be rising steadily most of the. afternoon. I'uines often emerge, but the quantity to-day was unusual. Rain this morning kept many skiers .indoors, but the weather cleared m the afternoon. The leading skiers are assiduously practising preparatory the Dominion championships, the start of which has been fixed for Thursday.
