ROTORUA, Monday Charged thai) at Reporoa on 1 -January 23 he cruelly ill-treated a cow by striking it on the hocks with a spade, James Gothorp, a labourer, aged JI6, was to-day sentenced to six months' imprisonment by justices in the Pol.ce. Court. The case was first brought to the notice of the police by a farmer of Reporoa, who had employed Gothcrp as a milker, • and who found a number of his cows about the puddock with their "♦tails'partly severed,! Accused disappeared after this discovery and was not seen again ur.til interviewed by the police a considerable time later. When charged to-d'ay he pleaded not guilty. In evidence the farmer descrilted accused as a very bad-tempered man.
