PAKURANGA FORM

GOOD HACKS APPEAR OUR JEAN IMPRESSES THE CARDINAL WINS WELL GAME FINISH BY VAL LU BY ARCHER Runners were numerous in tho hack races at tho Pakuranga Hunt meeting at Ellerslio on Saturday and the form revealed by tho three winners Our Jean, Brazen Bold and Tho Cardinal was good. Somo of the beaten horses who were not thoroughly ready also shaped very well and are likely to bo seen in a favourable light at the spring: meetings. Present indications arc that competition in tho hack class will bo very keen at the approaching meetings and races will be difficult to win. Tho good impression Our Jean created as a two-year-old last season was deepened by the impressive manner in which she won tho first division of tho Sylvia Park Handicap. In spite of tho fact that she received a chock early, sho gave tho opposition no ehanco in the straight and scored the easiest win of the day. It is improbable that Our Jean will remain long in tho hack ranks, as her winnings total £155, and one ;nore success should place her in open company. Bred by her owner, Mr. J/. Dunn, Our Jean is an upstanding filly by Vaals from Big Bertha, by Romeo from Kairamarama, by Marble Arch from Chiara, by Cuirassier from Ouida, by Yattendon, and sho looks like being a very useful performer, as she appears to be able to act woll in any kind of going. Like her dam, Big Bertha, who won races on the Auckland country circuit, she has plenty of substance and should be a profitable member of tho team at present being prepared by W Townsend at Cambridge. Brazen Bold Speedy Tho speedy Brazen Bold also opened his three-year-old career in promising fashion when he registered an easy vietory in the second division of the Sylvia Park Handicap. Brazen Bold took a second find two-fifths longer to win Ins division than Our Jean did but he drew No. 11 against her No. 1 at the barrier and there is no doubt that ho would have run faster time if lie had been ridden out in the last furlong. Brazen Bold has not the physique of Our Jean but he is a shapely colt who should provo a very useful sprinter. His winnings total £.' i Jo, so that he has not far to go before losing his hack status. Failure to secure a good position early militated against the chances of the topweight, Val Lu, in the first division of the Sylvia Park Handicap and he was only narrowly beaten for third. It was when lie came on the scene out near the lawn fence in the straight that Val Lu became prominent and "the game manner in which he fought on under his 9.7 in the very heavy going augurs well for his prospects at the coming meetings. Val Lu was among the horses who sprinted at Ellerslie on tlie morning of the races and he ran tho best three furlongs, registering time that was very creditable, even though he was plated. Ago is doing something for Kenneth Robert and he is racing more solidly than formerly. He made a great attempt to win the" second division of the Sylvia Park Handicap from end to end and held on courageously for second after being headed in the straight by the winner, Brazen Bold. The race should not'be harmful to Kenneth Robert and his forward condition should bo a factor in his favour at the early spring meetings. Reappearance of Sebrof For a horse who was having his first raco since October, 1937, Sebrof did very well to finish second in the first division of tho Sylvia Park Handicap, it is evident from his performance that ho has lost none of his speed and ho was unlucky to strike a smart filly like Our Jean produced in such forward condition. On occasions in the past Sebrof has been affected with bleeding, but He has been free from the trouble since being taken in hand by W. J. McLean and he should return to the winning list if all continues well with him. Tho race he had in the first divisioo of tho Sylvia Park Handicap should bo beneficial to Gainos, who finished a good third. Looking more robust than ho did last season, he did not appear to be as forward as some of. the others and in tho circumstances his performance was very encouraging. It is probable that Gamos will run on fairly well when his powers are fully developed and ho may get a middle distance solidly before tho close of tho season. One of the unlucky horses in tho second division of tho Sylvia Park Handicap was tho three-year-old Hunto, who mado up a lot of ground in tho straight to finish a close fourth. Tho future appears bright for Hunto, who has not done a great deal of racing, and he should bo an excellent prospect for a novice event or a hack sprint at the spring meetings. Trained by A. Winder at To En pa, Hunto is a three-year-old by Hunting Song from Dodo, a half-sister to the good performer Marquetcer. Bonnybelle Unlucky With C. G. Goulsbro in the saddle. Bonnybelle was well supported in tho second division of the Sylvia Park Handicap, but she failed to finish closer than ninth. Excuses are available for Bonnybello owing to tho fact_ that sho met with interference after going about a furlong and a-half. A repetition of the form she displayed in finishing second to Vaalso in Juno should onablo her to win in tho hack class and it should not be for lack of condition if she fails, for A. Kemp has her very well. Among other horses near tho outside, Clipper was slow away in the second division of tho Sylvia Park Handicap and ho was never dangerous, although he was noticed putting in good work at the end. Thero is no doubt about Clipper being very speedy and ho should be worth watching in his- next few starts, as his latest track form has boon very encouraging. Tellsom Shows Speed Tho three-year-old Tellsom displayed a lot of speed out in front in tho first division of tho Sylvia Park Handicap and, although ho tired in tho straight, his effort was encouraging. Another who mado a creditable showing was Beverley, who has improved considerably since going into tho care of G. Jenkins. Beverley runs on fairly woll and ho gives promiso of doing better tins season than formerly. Tho four-year-old The Cardinal justified his favouritism for tho Auckland Handicap by winning attractively, although his supporters wore caused somo uneasiness when ho was awkwardly placed on tho rails and somo lengths behind tho loaders at tho turn. Howover, ho was confidently ridden by 0. Evans and when an opening camo in tho straight Tho Cardinal soon took tho measuro of tho others; As ho was last away, it was a good performance. Tho Cardinal appears to ho a good handicap horso in tho making and. ho will disappoint if ho fails to win morn important races. By Night Raid from tho Clarenceux mare Pale.strina, ho is one of tho few chestnuts among his sir.o's stock and in that respect ho resembles the famous Pilar Lap. Present indications aro that Tho Cardinal will stay well and it should not bo long beforo ho reaches handicap company.
