HASTINGS HORSES

PROMISING MATERIAL KATHBELLA RETAINS SPEED ESSEX TRAINING ON NICELY [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] HASTINGS, Monday It is many years since llawko's Baytrained horses at the beginning of a season have been as promising as this spring, tho strength of the teams in general being reminiscent of tho time when tho district was ono of tho loading training and breeding centres of tlio Dominion. Tho strength really lies in the three and four-year-olds, particularly tho former. Hastings two-year-olds so far have not shown any great promise, but at Ngatarawa there arc three or four who might include the leading juvenile of the season. Also in training at Greenmeadows aro a couplo of very promising young gallopers. Weather conditions at Hastings on Saturday morning wero perfect and some good work was accomplished. Mount for Mr. G. G. Beatson On the plough, Ivathbella, who, is probably the speediest track worker in tho district, was given a gallop for tho first time since early last month, and, on a track which was not fast, sho impressed by registering 5Us for half a mile under restraint. In all probability she will begin her four-year-old career at Wanganui. Hallev, who is to contest tho Duko of Gloucester Cup at New Plymouth, strode over six furlongs in 1.21. He will be ridden by Mr.'G. G. Beatson. Beaulivro and lvobi were going very easily to complete five furlongs in 1.6. Beaulivre is not growing in height, but his quality and substance otherwise are outstanding. -Ho will have a race at the Taranaki Hunt meeting and'will then go to Wanganui for the Guineas. Hyderabad, an improving novice, and Tidal Lass ran three furlongs-comfort-ably in 40s. Ivar Winters Well Ivar, who should be a good middledistance performer in the near future, has wintered well. He hit out in bold style over half a mile in 545, but he was only given liis head in the filial furlong. Essex, the Great Northern Derby winner of 1937, has been standing up to his work in pleasing fashion. He was under restraint to run three furlongs in 395. Ho has developed into a 'fine individual. 11 Duce, who also is standing up well to training, was sprinted over a short course. Kinkajou had little difficulty in defeating tho Defoe—Golden Streak filly over half a mile in 525. Authoress, a big chestnut filly by Defoe from Otaura Lass, easily accounted for Lindruin over the same ground in 51s. Authoress should make tho grade this season with littlo difficulty. Endorsement and Flying Flag Ivalika, who has done no serious work since winning at Riccarton at Easter, accompanied Golden Melody over five furlongs in 1.8. Hagen made light of a five-furlong task, running the distance in company with Haile Selassie in 1.4. Hagen may race :it New Plymouth preparatory to contesting tho Hack Plates at Avondale. The useful three-vcar-old fillies Endorsement and Flying Flag were partners over half a mile, the latter, who is more forward, winning in 51 l-ss. Flying Flag in all probability will take her place in the Wanganui Guineas field, an engagement that may bo flattering on past form, although sho has every appearance of making good. Likely Defoe Two-Year-Old Golden Flame ran half a mile in 52 l-ss, being brought homo by tho speedy two-vear-old Great Fire, by Defoe from Sarabande. Great Fire is most impressive in action. Tea Lord, a juvenile in J. Percival's stable, hit out freely in a run down the straight. ; Three fillies, Smoke I rail (Gainscourt —Knight Ray), ono by Lord «Q l 'ex —Version and another by Bulaiulshar —Parakeet, finished as named at intervals of a length at the end of three furlongs in 39 2-ss. Misurina, a Duke of Gloucester Cup candidate, ran once round on the plough in 1.44, being assisted over the last six furlongs in 1.21 by Morning Flight. Smooger ran away from Tableau and Fasolt, the three-year-old by Siegfried —Noisy, in 555. Royal Star 11., an English-bred gelding. worked impressively. Ho has only to stand up to training to bo a bargain at the £25 uaid for him last month. Sternchase Gallops Freely Dainty Dell and Social Credit, two in the Wanganui Guineas, headed Black Majesty over half a mile in 51s. Sternchase moved freely to register 50 4-5s for half a mile. Centrepoise was doing it easily alongside Reipar to complete six furlongs in 1.18 1-5. Sir Nigel, under restraint, registered 1.8 for five furlongs. The two-year-old Loighon—Host filly easily defeated Ovraid by Myosotis—Miss Nightraid, over three furlongs in 41s. The daughter of Host is one of the most promising juveniles here. Barbara; Miller, by Arausio — Huiarau, and Black Out, by Bulandsliar —Leith, two-year-old fillies in S. J. Reid's stable, made their first appearanee on the track, having had their preliminary training at Karamu. Barbara Miller is full-sister to tho speedy Goira, and Black Out is of tho same family as Anomaly and Normandy.
