IMPROVING PACERS

GREY LYNN HANDICAP JOSEDALE GRATTAN'S LINES STEADY PROGRESS OF TSANA BY ABAYDOS A well-balanced field of improving pncors in- tho Grey Lynn Handicap, including four who only left tho maiden ranks at winter meetings, will make this event one of tho interesting items of a fine programme. One who will attract attention is the well-bred American horse Josedalo Grattan. lie did not race until -tho season was well advanced, but in three starts he registered a first and a second. Ilis second to Our Jewel in the Devonport Handicap in April showed him up in a favourable light, but his outstanding performance in May, when he displayed great courage in what looked an impossible task in setting out after Television to win in the first division of tho Mangere Handicap, drew attention -to his future prospects. He is by Grattan Mclvinney, 2.4, son of tho triple two-minute sire Grattan Royal, his dam being Miss. Belwin, 2.2£ by Belwin, 2.G, a producer of 10 under the 2.3 standard. Successful Cross Tsana, who won the second division of the Manukau Handicap at tho winter meting, had a good deal of experience before ho succeeded, but he has done very well in the interval, and there is every likelihood that his record this term will bo good. Tsana is bred the way of many of the Dominion's best young pacers, being by Jack Potts, from a Logan Pointer mare, a successful cross. Abyssinia, dam of Tsana, also produced Ace Pot. Double Peter, who profited by travelling and racing on the West Const circuit, made his first successful effort at Epsom in May and, although unplaced at his next start, he was not discredited in being unable to concede good novices 48vds. Tsana won off 3-5 in 2.59 and Double Peter's_ time for fourth, off 3.1, was 2.55 3-5. Grand Dame's success at Claudelands was deserved, as she had been placed at Thames and Hawera and was unlucky at New Plymouth. She has furnished well and is likely to extend her record. Grand Dame is by Jack Potts from Manama Rose, by Matchlight from Dandy Rose, dam of Rayon D'Or. Consistency of Amywin Consistency has been a feature of Amywyn's form since she came to Epsom, and she has not missed a place in three starts. She appeared unlucky to be beaten by Marcus in tho April Handicap and at Hamilton sho was not quite a match for Axminster, who ran in his best style. Her latest outing was in May, when third to Hillcrest and Our Jewel. Amywyn has gone along the right way since then and it will not be for lack of condition if she fails to maintain her record. Kewpie's Queen did not make the advancement last season her three-year-old displays would have suggested, but she was frequently close to tho placed horses. She has thickened and if age has played its part Ivewpie's Queen, who is a smart beginner, will have prospects. The season before last Acceleration displayed much promise and, after several placed efforts, she won well at Hawera. She was raced only three times in the early part of last term and the subsequent spell ought to have benefited tho Acron mare. Llewellyn's Pet Doing Well Kitty's Choice is an inexperienced novice, claiming relationship to Tangaroa. Militia won well in tho spring and later she was placed. Llewellyn's Pet was showing signs of returning form when she raced at Hawera, but she was not raced at the winter meetings. Should she regain her best form she would be hard to beat off her present line. Derby Lu was showing some improvement as the season ended and, if sho has gone along the right way in the interval, she will be entitled to respect, especially as she is not at a disadvantage on heavy ground. The fine form of Josedale Grattan, Tsana, Double Peter, Grand Dame and Amywyn indicates that favouritism will be divided, and if the track is not too heavy most support may come for Josedale Grattan and Tsana.

The New Zealand Racing Conference last month carried a remit providing that every club have at least ohe set o? white colours to bo used on occasions when an owner's registered colours are not available. The first time this rule was put into operation was at Iviccarton ft week, when Schoolgirl carried the all-white" jacket. Schoolgirl was purchased a few days before the race by the former horseman G. H. Humphries, who did not have sufficient time to securo colours of his own.
