TENNIS IN AMERICA

NATIONAL DOUBLES EVENT DAVIS CUP COACHES (Received August 17, 5.5 p.m.) BOSTON, Aug. 10 The American tennis doubles championship was continued to-day, the semi-finals resulting as follows:—Parker and Mclvcill beat Bobbitt and Guernsey, 6—4, 10 —8 6 —'2; RigES and Cooke beat Peacock and ImhofT, 6 —4, 6—3, 6—l. The appointment of Bruce Barnes as coach of the American Davis Cup team is criticised by the New York press. The complaint is made that while the Australians have snapped up two of the country's most brilliant strategists in Vincent Richards and George Lott,. the American Lawn Tennis Association has passed over good men for "a fair to middling Texas amateur, who never made the cup team, and lias not shown any gift as a professional." The constant rebuffing of Tildens and Vine's offers to act as coaches is also the subject of criticism. A prominent commentator. Bob Considine, states that the United States spent 75,000 dollars until the appearance, of Donald Budge in trvintr to win back the cup. He is of the opinion that America is in extremo danger of losing the trophy to Australia for a decade and will face an expenditure of 200,000 dollars to regain it.
