HOCKEY SEASON
REPRESENTATIVE PLAY
CHALLENGE SHIELD MATCH APPEARANCE OF FIJIAN TEAM An interesting programme, which should produce fast and probably spectacular hockey, lias been arranged by the Auckland Hockey Association for Hobson Park to-morrow. The main attraction will be the game in which Auckland will defend the New Zealand Challenge Shield against Waikato. The Auckland team is particularly strong, while the Waikato eleven is considered an outstanding combination, indicating a hard-fought, even match.
A second representative fixture will be a game between tho touring Fijian side and the Auckland provincial team. A large measure of success has so far been enjoyed by Fiji, and there is every promise of a fast and exciting contest being staged against the provincial sido which includes many fino players. FRANKLIN BEATS FIJIANS . MARGIN OF TWO GOALS [FROM OUR OWN' CORRESPONDENT} .WAIUKU, Thursday Before an attendance of several hundred spectators; tho Franklin Hockey Association s representative team defeated the E iji touring team at Massey Park this afternoon by three goals to one. Rain, which tell before the match, 1 made tho ground very' wet and toward one side surface water lay in places to a depth of about half an inch. In tho Eecond half, rain set in again and there was no score in this spell. ■ , Fiji looked dangerous in the first few minutes, but Franklin came back, ana rapid work by L. Doull, of the Franklin forwards, notched the first goal. R. Williams, another Franklin forward, showed out in a good movement down the wing, which was capped bv good centring: and a goal by E. McGowan, also of the forwards. A. good passing movement by Franklin reached the circle. Here S. Bell, a forward, made a great snot into the net from about three yards to one side of the corner post and only about a yard in front of the goal-line. The Franklin goalkeeper, W. Bagshaw, infringed before a very dangerous Fiji attack in the circle. A penalty bully was given. against him about a yard from the goal-line and about the same distance from the corner of the net. The Fijian centre-forward, G. Martin, beat Bagshaw in the bully and goaled. . In the second half, .Fiji pressed Franklin hard, but the home held. Messrs G. Wells and H. Watts, both of Auckland, were umpires. i' . ■ Following are the results of. games played to date by the touring Fijian team: —v. Piako, won, 2 —l; v. Whakatane, won, 4—o; v. Rotorua, won, 3 —-0; v.
