NAZI LEADER
SPEECH AT DANZIG NEXT WORD WITH HITLER BRITISH PRESS COMMENT WARSAW NOT IMPRESSED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright British Wireless LONDON, Aug. II British' press comment on the speech at Danzig of the Nazi leader Ilerr Forster notes that while the speech was phrased in the accustomed language of violence calculated further to inflame tho tension it did not in itself announce a new stage in the. crisis. Tho Daily Telegraph says: "As might have been expected, the speech left the nejit word with Herr Hitler, of whose voice Hcrr Forster is regarded as the echo. Not until Herr Hitler chooses to speak shall we know what is the meaning of the phrases in which Herr h'orster proclaimed that the hour of liberation was at hand, that Danzig would again return to the Reich, and promised that there would bo obedi enoe on the part of Danzigers to every order that the Fuehrer gives. "Much of the speech cast the whole blame for the present situation upon the Poles and was a transparent travesty of the recent history of tho Free City. "At this critical moment tliercr was on Herr Korster's part no attempt to emulate 'the restraint which Marshal Smiglv-Rydz exhibited on Sunday. That, however, was scarcely to be expected. from our knowledge of the manner in which the campaign in Danzig has been conducted, and of the sources from which it derived its inspiration. "It is left to Herr Hitler to show Europe the inner meaning of these oratorical phrases, and upon his interpretation of them—whether they mean negotiations as to the future of the Free City or an endeavour to restore it to the Reich by force—depends the issue of peace or war." The Berlin correspondent of the Tinies, according to a United Press Association cablegram, says great disappointment is expressed at the British reception of Hcrr Forstcr's speech at Danzig. Xazi circles complain that it has been minimised by the London press.
The Warsaw correspondent of the Times says official quarters maintain that the speech lias fallen flat.
