Aug. 5 The engine and three carriages / of tho Islo of Arran express from Glasgow plunged over an embankment at Saltcoats and three people were killed and 20 others injured. The dead include the fireman, and the injured include the driver, who tried to extricate the fireman from under tho engine, which was impossible until a crane was requisitioned. The eight coaches of the train carlied 400 holiday makers. The engine plunged down tho embankment when rounding a curve and finished within five yards of a Miners' Home, the 50 inmates of which rushed from their lunch to aid in rescue work. ' An unemployed man turned off the steam after a crippled inmate of the ' homo had penetrated scalding clouds in order ,to liberate trapped passengers. The first coach and several others were telescoped. One perilously overhung tho embankment and rescuers had to use axes to release the terrified occupants of tho carriago nearest to the tender.
A woman passenger gave birth to a ' baby at an adjacent house after being rescued. WORKMEN KILLED ' .TRAIN AMONG CROWD .
