In David Durham's latest novel, Against the Law," Lylc Cartlieu), through faked evidence, is condemned to twelve years' penal servitude for killing in a fit of icalous rage the lover of the exotic Natalie Gironde. His son David and daughter Joan are determined to prove their father't innocence. Ihe Writer exploits a most complex situation, and we find Joan assuming the identity of Natalie's niece when the latter dies in tragic circumstances, In pursuance of this impersonation she is compelled to marry a man she docs not love, and n° !"'/ develops into a skilfully blended story of drama, romance and mystery.
