hope gibbons shield SUCCESS FOR MANUKAU TEAM Bettor team % work and superior allround form gave the Manukau team a comfortable win in the second series of teams' races for cyclists for the Hope Gibbons Shield, held on Saturday afternoon. The event was held over a 20-tnile course, starting from Carrington Street, Point Chevalier, and extending to the top of Birdwood Hill and back. The draw for starting positions resulted in Beach Haven being sent away first, at two o'clock. Papakura had drawn to start second, but this team was scratched, and Papatoctoe went away five minutes after Manukau. After Papatoctoe, Northern and Lynndale left, at five-minute intervals. An exceptionally strong finishing sprint was shown by E. Hughes (Lynndale), who came in over 100 yards ahead of the other members of his team. The times of the tennis were as follows: Manukau, lh 1 fiin Gs; Lynndale 4h 26m Ms; Beach Haven, lh -Mm 435; Papatoctoe, 4h 40m 445. The placings in the first series were:—Manukau, 1; Papatoetoe, 2; Lynndale, 3; Beach Haven, 4; Northern, 5; Papakura, 0. MANUKAU CLUB JUNIOR RECORD LOWERED Twenty-one junior riders faced the starter in tho five-mile race conducted by the Manukau Club at Avondale. Riding brilliantly from scratch, D. McGrath lowered the existing record, but failed to overhaul M. W. Knrtovich, who defeated S. Lloyd in a fast sprint to the line. In spite of the absence of the team members in the Hope Gibbons Shield contest, 32 riders were sent away in the 15mile handicap. W. R. Walker, riding from the .-,m 30s mark, steadily worked his way through the field to win by IDs from C. A. Pickncll. Following were the results: — Juniors.—M. W. Kurlovich, 2m 15s, 1; S. Buchanan, 3m, 3; S. T. Humphries, 4m 30s, 4. Time, 43m 58s. Fastest time was secured by F. Tredrea in 40m 38s. AUCKLAND CLUB The sixth annual race for the Eric Cleaver Memorial Cup was run over 20 miles at Sylvia Park on Saturday afternoon by members of the Auckland Cycle Club. The limit rider. J. King, led from the start, and it was only in the last quarter of a mile that he was overtaken by R. Gilmour. K. Fish and R. C'happell were the scratch pair. A junior race held over ten miles resulted in a win for H. Marshall, who defeated the limit rider. R. Mansdn. Following were the results: — „. Seniors. —R. Gilmour. 7m 30s, 1; J. King. 9m, 2; P. METROPOLITAN CLUB \ good field faced the starter for the Metropolitan Cycle Club's 25-mile cup race. The race was run under wintry conditions and a strong head wind tested the stamina of riders J. BEACH HAVEN CLUB Following was the result of the Beach Haven Amateur Cycling Club's combined senior and junior event held on Saturday:— J. Mortison, scr, I; J. Pulpan, 2m 30s, 2; A, Barrington, 2m 30s, 3. Time, 50m. The winner also secured fastest time. NORTH SHORE CLUB The North Shore Amateur Cycling Club held a combined rare over the east coast bays course, a distance of 22 miles. The resuit was as follows: —S. Brown, scr, 1; A. Lytford, 5m 30s, 2; I. Merson, 4m 30s, 3. Time, lh <im Bs. S. Brown secured fastest time. NORTHERN AND LYNNDALE CLUBS The Northern and Lynndale Amateur Cycling Clubs held a combined 18-mile senior and a 10-mile junior race on Saturday afternoon. Following were the results:— Juniors.—A. King (Lynndale). 6m, 1; RMatthews (Lynndale), .3m 30s. 2; O. Johnson (Northern). 3m 30s, 3. Time, 33in 525. Fastest time was secured by R. Clark (Lynndale), in 30m ISs. Seniors. —h.
