WHARF CONGESTION
OVERHEAD COVERED PIERS CIVIC LEAGUE SUGGESTIONS % A decision was'made at a meeting of the.Civic League held yesterday at the Penwonien's Club rooms to write to the Auckland Harbour Board asking it to consider the construction of overhead covered piers for pedestrians, with access provided by stairways. The time had arrived, it was stated, when steps should be taken to relieve the congestion and danger of the present wharves, where insufficient descrimination was made between vehicular and pedestrian traffic. The president. Mrs. Kenneth Gordon, who presided, stated that piers of this type wore in use at Vancouver and Honolulu, and pointed out their advantages. In addition to the freedom from jostling with commercial vehicles, these covered piers were more pleasant and more convenient places of embarkation for passengers, and would add a dignity which was sadly lacking to the port facilities of Auckland. The advisability of public houses being closed at noon on Saturdays, in accordance with the law pertaining to other trades, was also discussed. Although it: was agreed that injustice was being done hv the preference allowed to the sale of liquor on Saturday afternoons, it was felt that a much graver injury might be enacted by men taking homo large quantities of liquor on Friday evenings, and drinking in front of children during the week-end. Tho matter was deferred for further discussion. A letter was received from the Town Clerk. Mr. J. Moiling, in which he stated that the request for the provision of a rubbish tin at the corner of Remuera Road and Upland Road had been noted for attention. It was later stated by a member that the receptacle had already been provided. Regarding the request that William .Street should be made a one-way street, the Town Clerk wrote that the matter would he considered later when the by-laws were being reviewed. 'lt was decided to write to the Town Clerk to express gratification that the rubbish bin had been installed so promptly, and also to express the hope that in time equal attention would lie given to the traffic problem in William Street.
