CAR TRAGEDY
PEDESTRIAN KILLED DEATH ON WAY TO HOSPITAL RELATIVE SERIOUSLY INJURED 3-YEAR-OLD CHILD ESCAPES [BY TELEGRAPH —PBESB ASSOCIATION] WANGANUI, Wednesday Two pedestrians were struck by a motor-car on the main Wanganui-New Plymouth highway a mile north of Waverley at 4.30 p.m. to-day. One died when being taken to the Patea Hospital and the other was admitted to the hospital in a serious condition. A three-year-old child being wheeled in a pushchair escaped injury. The victims were:
Killed Mr. William Ellis, single, aged 27, a ■labourer employed by the Petone Borough Council. ' Injured Mrs. Hilda Ellis, aged about 32, of Waverley, sister-in-law of Mr. Ellis. She is suffering from a severe wound in the head and concussion. Her condition is serious. Mr. Ellis arrived in Waverley by service car at three o'clock in the afternoon intending to spend a week's holiday with his brother, who lives at the Waverley racecourse and works for Messrs. Bremer Bros. He was met by Mrs. Ellis, who had with her her three-year-old daughter in a push-chair. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis were walking from Waverley on the way home, and a mile north of the township they were overtaken by a car driven by Mr. G. A. Streat, of Victoria Street, Dargaville, who, with his wife and three children, was on his way home. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis were struck by the car, but the child escaped. Mr. Ellis, whose head and back were severely injured, died before the ambu T lance reached the hospital.
