HARBOUR TRAGEDY

Sir, —It is with regret that we learn again of deaths caused by a car plunging into the harbour last evening. Surely the Devonport Steam Ferry Company should devise some scheme whereby a white gate could be erected at the top of the ramp leading tq the vehicular ferry, such as is used in England at level crossings. This precaution would stop any unsuspecting motorist at night from going down the ramp. I feci sure that thero is room for improvement in this direction. Jf such a scheme were adopted the man on the ferry would have to open the gate before cars disembarked or embarked, and when the ferry was not in position the gate would be closed, which would stop motorists from driving down. Careful. 12/4/39.
