BOOKMAKING CASE
OPERATIONS AT ELLERSLIE BETS WITH CONSTABLE PENALTY OF £2O IMPOSED A plea of guilty to a charcc of carrying on the business of a bookmaker at Ellerslie on April 8 was entered by Charles Gardner, labourer, aged 51, who appeared before Mr. C. It. Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday.
Detective - Sergeant McHugh, who prosecuted, said that, in consequence of complaints made as to the activity of bookmakers on "the hill" at Ellerslic, n constable made bets with defendant. on April 8. Toward the end of the last race defendant was accosted by Detective-Sergeant Aplin, and he admitted lie had taken bets. "He said ho wont with £6 and he had £lB odd when accosted," said Mr. McHugh. "He says he was just a silver bettor, but he was apparently betting very fast. He says he has only started it and that ho receives ISs a week sustenance." Defendant said that £8 10s of the money lound on him was not bis own. A fine of £2O witli 10s costs was imposed.
